Apple revealed its latest earbuds during the iPhone 16 launch event earlier this week: the AirPods 4. Rumors suggested we might get a new generation of the AirPods Max, but some new colors and a USB-C port were the extent of the changes. Announcements about the AirPods Pro focused on the fact that the top-tier buds would get listening performance improvements via a software update this fall.
That makes the new AirPods 4 the only new addition to Apple’s personal audio lineup. They come in two varieties: with active noise cancellation for $179 and without that feature for $129. Engadget’s Billy Steele tried out the more expensive buds for a short time after the event in Cupertino and his initial impressions were positive. We’ll post a full review soon, but in the meantime, here’s how to pre-order yours ahead of the AirPods 4 release date on September 20.
Apple AirPods 4
The new mid-tier Apple AirPods 4 have the H2 chip and now support active noise cancellation and transparency mode like the high-end AirPods Pro – though this feature is only available on the more expensive version of the buds. They cost $179 with ANC and $129 without it. If you get the pricier buds, they can automatically change modes based on your environment and lower the audio when you start talking.
Other features include a new case that supports wireless charging or a wired USB-C connection. The case now also has a speaker that helps you find it under your bed or driver’s seat using the Find My app.
The AirPods 4 cost $129 without active noise cancellation and $179 with it. They can be pre-ordered now and will hit store shelves (and start shipping) on September 20.
Apple AirPods Max
We didn’t get a new generation of AirPods Pro — last year’s update is the most current version — but the high-end buds are getting a number of new listening features in the form of software updates this fall. The AirPods Max just got a minor update with a USB-C connector and new colors. They’re also available for pre-order now and will start shipping on September 20.
